Microsoft Backtracks on Xbox Restrictions - Wall Street Journal

By IAN SHERRBloomberg News

Microsoft showed off its Xbox One console in June at the E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Microsoft Corp. said Wednesday it will reverse some unpopular policies it recently announced for its coming Xbox One videogame console.

Following loud consumer complaints, Microsoft backtracked on some unpopular new policies for its Xbox One. George Stahl reports on MoneyBeat. Photo: Getty Images.

The Redmond, Wash., software company said it would no longer require its Xbox to connect to the Internet each day, nor would it restrict how its videogame discs are traded, resold or rented.

"We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds," Don Mattrick, head of Microsoft's entertainment division that houses the Xbox, said in a statement.

The changes are a clear misstep for Microsoft, whose currently selling Xbox 360 has reigned as the top videogame console in the U.S. for more than two years, according to NPD Group.

Microsoft unveiled its $499 Xbox One in May to much acclaim for its new features and high fidelity images.

But shortly after, the company fell under heavy criticism among gamers for its newly restrictive stance on used games and game play.

The policies for the Xbox One due out in November included offering technology to videogame publishers to restrict how titles are resold or traded at participating retailers.

The result was a large campaign by customers, partly through Twitter, to convince Microsoft to reverse course.

Compounding that pressure, rival Sony Corp. said its coming PlayStation 4 would not include such restrictions, and instead allow customers to freely trade, share and resell game discs as they pleased. Sony also said its device would not require an Internet connection.

"When gamers buy a PS4 disc, they have the right to use that copy of the game, they can trade in that copy of the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever," said Sony executive Jack Tretton to rounds of applause during the company's presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo last week. "It won't stop working if you haven't authenticated within 24 hours."

That and the price tag, which Sony said would be $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, swayed many gamers away from Microsoft's upcoming product. The following day after Sony's announcement, preorders for the PlayStation 4 were so high that the device was listed as the top-selling videogame product on Amazon.com Inc.'s website, above the Xbox One.

In response, Sony executives also said they were raising internal estimates for the PlayStation 4's initial sales.

Microsoft's efforts to placate unhappy gamers though will also change some of the new technologies the company planned to offer with the device.

The company said a videogame's disc will need to be inserted into the Xbox in order to play, and sharing titles wirelessly among households will be abandoned. Games purchased over the Internet won't be able to be shared or resold, Microsoft said. "It will work just as it does today on Xbox 360," Mr. Mattrick said.

The videogame maker also said its Xbox One will lose one restriction the Xbox 360 currently has, eliminating various rules requiring discs purchased in specific regions of the world to only work on corresponding devices programmed for those areas.

Some investors were clearly happy with the news, pushing shares of GameStop Corp., which derives roughly half of its profits from the trading and sales of used games, up 6% in after-hours trading to $40.84.

Microsoft shares remained flat after closing down 1.1% at $34.59.

Pete Dodd a 36-year-old adult caregiver in New Haven, Conn., who had rallied gamers to send messages to industry executives using Twitter, said he was pleased with the changes.

"It's a victory for us," Mr. Dodd said. But Microsoft still has a ways to go before its relationship with enthusiasts, also known a hard-core gamers, is repaired.

"Even the flip flopping on this, even though it's a good sign, it does paint a picture of a corporation that doesn't know what it's doing," he said.

Mr. Dodd said he'll be sticking with his pre-order for the PlayStation 4, which is due later this year. Now that Microsoft's policy has changed, however, he'll consider buying Xbox One later on as well.

Neonatologist celebrates Father's Day with his 10 sons - CBS News

This Father's Day, Dr. Joseph A. Garcia-Prats has at least 10 reasons to be thankful for -- his 10 sons.

"Cathy (my wife) wanted five, and I wanted five so it works perfectly," he told CBSNews.com, laughing.

The Texas Children's Hospital neonatologist is father to Anthony "Tony" Joseph, David "Dave" Victor, Christopher "Chris" Paul, Joseph "Joe Pat" Patrick, Matthew "Matt" Thomas, Mark Stephen, Thomas "Chop" Martin, Daniel "Danny Joe" Joseph, James "Jamie" Michael, and Timothy "Tim" Robert.

It's certainly a mouthful to say, and Joseph jokingly admits they were running out of names near the end. But, he wouldn't have it any other way. He admitted after their third child was a boy, he and his wife knew they would have all boys on their hands.

"We started praying that they were boys because we had the system down really well," he admitted. "We had lost of clothes, and we knew how things were going to work."

The Garcia-Prats boys

/ Courtesy of Dr. Joseph A. Garcia-Prats

Even the brothers got used to the fact that it was going to be an almost all-male house. When Cathy was pregnant with her sixth son, her concerned son Mark pointed out that they didn't know where the baby would sleep if it was a girl. Tony and David volunteered that she could sleep in the garage.

Joseph explained that being a doctor for critically-ill newborns helped him prepare for his own large brood at home and vice versa.

"I think in both roles you have to be dedicated to that role," he said. "You also have to be a very good listener. You have to be very respectful of your patients, of the family, of the mom and dad. Likewise, at home, you have to be dedicated to that role as a father, dedicated to that role as a spouse and respectful of all your children's attributes."

Eldest son Tony especially picked up on those nurturing qualities. He followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor. He's currently working as a pediatrician with the Baylor International Pediatrics AIDS initiative at Texas Children's Hospital, and is currently based in South Africa.

"It's kind of nice that we share the underlining joys and challenges of medicine," Tony explained to CBSNews.com.

The decision surprised his father and mother, but Joseph said Tony was always a good role model and dedicated so he fit the medical tract perfectly.

Tony said his father never pushed him towards medicine, but he realized that it was what he wanted to do. He even got an opportunity to work with his father while they were both at Texas Children's Hospital.

"Friends and colleagues always spoke so highly of my dad and what a great clinician he was," Tony said. "I always looked up to him as a child. It was amazing to have a little bit of a different perspective and insight to his work and see how well respected he was."

"I was really proud and still am of everything he does and how he carries himself," Tony added.

Apple's iOS 7 Is A Smorgasbord For Game Developers, With Sprite Kit, Game ... - TechCrunch

Apple's developer bits are generally the bigger picture story that comes out of WWDC, and some details are slowly emerging about those 1,500 or so new APIs Apple has added for devs to take advantage of. Some of the better news is around new gaming technologies, which should result in much improved experiences for both gamers and the people creating the games they play.

iOS 7 will introduce support for 'Made for iPhone, iPod and iPad' (MFi) program-compatible game controller hardware (via <a href='http://9to5mac.com/2013/06/12/ios-7-to-include-support-for-standardized-mfi-hardware-game-controllers-new-turn-based-game-modes-more-for-gamers/), which means developers will finally be able to access system-level tools for building in support for a wide range of devices from accessory manufacturers. The new API supports both controller sheaths that hold the iPhone or device itself, and standalone controllers that would more closely resemble your traditional gamepad.

New images found by Touch Arcade from the iOS 7developer'sguide shows that controllers will be able to offer support for configurations of two joysticks, a directional pad, and up to six buttons at least, so that it should be able to replicate the setup of traditional controllers like the PlayStation DualShock or Super Nintendo gamepad pretty easily. For retro titles and core games alike, this should be a tremendous addition to the arsenal, and you can expect third-party hardware accessory makers like Griffin, Belkin, etc., as well as startups on Kickstarter, to be all over this. There are third-party controllers already out there, but they've always required devs to integrate an external SDK to get games working with them, that's not going to be the case anymore.

Retro games should also get a nice boost from SpriteKit, Apple's new framework for developing more simple, 2D style games and creating interestingphysicseffects like the one shown in the video below. Sprite Kit looks to be pretty powerful, but has the disadvantage of not reaching outside of Apple's ecosystem, or of supporting older devices. Still, Apple has a very fast-adopting user base for new versions of iOS, and there are a lot of dev shops that focus only on iOS, so we could see some very cool stuff built with this new, simpler Unity-type engine on Apple's devices.

Other new gaming features include turn-based multiplayer game modes, ladder rankings for high score leaderboards and more. But the game controller element alone could have a huge impact on iOS and its role in the mobile gaming market, and it's quite likely that Nintendo and Sony should be watching very closely to see how the ecosystem around that feature develops.

E3 Show Loses Ground in Videogames War - Wall Street Journal- India

By DAISUKE WAKABAYASHI and IAN SHERR

The Electronic Entertainment Expo for years served as the center of the videogame world'an annual gathering of who's who in the business. But E3, which kicks off this week in Los Angeles, is losing some cachet as it fails to attract the industry's new rising stars: creators of hit games for smartphones.

The phenomenon reflects a broader transition in the $66 billion videogame industry.

Videogames are moving from the near-exclusive domain of dedicated consoles to a wider universe of smartphones, tablet computers and other devices. This shift is changing the landscape of an industry long ruled by console makers and publishers that sell games for them.

Francisco Cacares

Instead, companies like GungHo Online Entertainment Inc., creator of Japan's mobile game phenomenon "Puzzle & Dragons," are on the rise. The game'a mix of puzzle game Bejeweled and cartoonish battle game Pokemon'is adding one million smartphone users every few weeks, propelling the company's market capitalization temporarily to surpass that of longtime industry stalwart Nintendo Co. A GungHo executive says the company sees "no reason" to attend E3.

Finnish game maker Supercell Oy, known primarily for its hit mobile game, "Clash of Clans," a battle and strategy game made for Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPad, also is skipping the convention. E3's focus is on console games so is out of touch when it comes to the emerging world of mobile and social games, Supercell says.

"It is almost as if they're two separate industries," says Greg Harper, the company's general manager of North American operations. "There are so many differences that in many respects the games industry has a hard time reconciling that."

The growing importance of the smartphone as a games device comes as the industry's traditional heavyweights are pushing new game machines to spur upgrades by consumers. At separate news conferences on Monday, Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp. are expected to offer details about game consoles that are scheduled for release later this year. The companies didn't wait to use E3 for the initial announcements of the machines, opting to host their own events in recent months.

Sony has said its new PS4 will feature Internet-based features such as the ability to upload game-play sequences and to stream games from remote servers to all but eliminate wait times while games download.

Microsoft is positioning its new Xbox One to be a living-room hub capable of doing more than just playing videogames, with the ability to play and control live television from a cable or satellite box.

The companies haven't announced definitive release dates or prices for the new consoles.

Nintendo, which dominated the previous generation of consoles with its motion-sensing Wii, got a jump on its rivals by releasing its new Wii U game machine in November. The device's high-definition graphics and controller with a six-inch, touch-screen display was aimed at winning back customers who were turning to their smartphones for entertainment. But, in a worrisome sign for Microsoft and Sony, the Wii U has struggled to gain momentum'twice falling short of the company's sales targets.

Nintendo says it has decided not to hold its traditional E3 news conference, opting instead for smaller, targeted sessions with reporters and attendees and online presentations to promote new games.

Japanese mobile-game company Gree Inc. also is taking a more subdued approach to E3. After building a lavish booth last year, complete with a bar, Gree is passing on the event this year. The goal of last year's booth was to raise awareness about the company, but Gree's management decided this year that E3 wasn't a priority, a company spokeswoman says.

E3 sessions for the media start Monday, and the event opens officially on Tuesday. It is expected to draw 45,000 attendees to the Los Angeles Convention Center.

'The Week Ahead looks at coming corporate events.

Jamaica vs. Mexico: Preview and TV schedule - SB Nation

Jamaica started Mexico's nightmare Hex, and now they have a chance to push Chepo de la Torre and El Tri to the brink in Kingston.

The final round of World Cup qualifying was supposed to be a cakewalk for Mexico. The CONCACAF champions had so much more talent than any other team that the Hex was really just going to be a chance to fine-tune things for next year, when they hoped to be a darkhorse at the 2014 World Cup.

But Jamaica flipped the script in the first match of the round, outplaying Mexico in a draw at the Azteca and bringing El Tri back down to Earth. Mexico hasn't gotten back off the ground either.

For more on El Tri's Road to Brazil visit: FMF State of Mind

Since drawing in their opening match, Mexico has drawn twice more, including again at the Azteca against the United States, and remain winless in the Hex. The heat has been turned up on Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre and El Tri currently sit in fifth place in the group, outside of a World Cup place, with most of their toughest matches yet to play.

If Mexico are going to climb the Hex table, it will have to start on Tuesday night in Jamaica and it will have to look very different than when these teams met back in February. Then, the Reggae Boyz should have won, but Jobi McAnuff and Ryan Johnson each blew golden chances to allow Mexico to get away with an undeserved point.

Jamaica's speed gave Mexico fits, especially with the way they closed down Hector Herrera and Carlos Salcido in the center of the midfield. But if Friday's friendly was any indication, Mexico will start Jesus Zavala and Gerardo Torrado in the middle this time around, both of whom are better equipped to handle the Reggae Boyz's pressure. El Tri will also have Pablo Barrera available on the right, giving them a scintillating winger who will not just create chances, but also open space in the middle for others.

Three matches into the 10-man Hex, Jamaica are the only team below Mexico in the table with just two points, one behind Mexico. If either team loses in Kingston on Tuesday night, they will have a steep uphill climb to get to the World Cup. It's not an elimination match, but it is close. Both teams need a win, especially Mexico and Chepo, who could be fired before long if he doesn't turn around a Hex that should have been a coronation, but has instead started as a train wreck.

Match date/time: Tuesday, June 4; 9:30 p.m. ET

Venue: Independence Park, Kingston, Jamaica

TV: Telemundo (USA Spanish), TDN Mexico (Mexico), TV Azteca 7 (Mexico)
